Tutorial – Nikolai Lockertsen – Scooter Trouble process

Nikolai Lockerston is a digital artist and matte painter (someone who digitally paints realistic environments for films, games, etc.) based in Moss, Norway. He has made a significant mark in the film industry, providing art for over 30 films such as Kon-Tiki and The Mortal Instruments.

Lockerston offers tutorials on his Youtube account as and Art Study Online that instruct viewers on various drawing techniques on the iPad.

Nikolai Lockertsen‘s process videos have been perfectly refined since he began. He forgoes lengthy lectures and talk-over and instead give quick showcases of him at work complemented with cinematic ambient music.

In this video example, Nikolai adds extensive detail for his piece, “Scooter Trouble”. It’s impressive just how intricate he goes for his creation of Shanty Town. Watch as layers are progressively added on top of each other, starting from basic lines all the way to this three-dimensional, photo-realistic environment. Vibrant colors and warm textures give Lockerston a distinct stamp. He finalizes this video with shadowing and carefully drawn signs throughout the storefront.
