It’s been quite a while since we’ve done an Artist Spotlight. We’re bringing back this series with rising star Hugh Pindur, an illustrator for the famed Pathfinder. Hugh is a talented artist that consistently does great fantasy pieces.
His work, always dynamic, tends to depict action-like fantasy scenes that take your breath away. As an example, let’s take a close look at his process for a recent illustration titled “Tag Team”.

Step one was to create a great composition. He started by putting all his ideas on the digital canvas/paper. Notice that the original idea was “Dragon vs. Adventurers”. It’s all about the movement here – or so it seems.

Things start to take shape here! An adventuring duo working together against a dragon in an unusual way. Here Hugh continues to develop the basic idea.

Finally, color comes into the picture! Notice how he uses blue to mute the background while the clothing and the Wyvern colors take center stage. Also, notice how the action is becoming clearer to see. Objects are flying in the same trajectory that the archer is. This can’t be by accident.

We’ve got quite a bit of detail at this point. The Wyvern’s head has been tilted, adding some drama and movement to the scene! It really does draw your attention to the flying archer.

Here we are with the final piece. The Archer’s body has been shifted to exaggerate her being catapulted into the air. It’s a good call because the shift really emphasizes her target; The Wyvern.
We’ve not done an Artist Showcase in a long time, but Hugh forced our hands with this action packed scene. The composition; The attention to detail; The skill he displays in guiding your eye to the right place. The world needs more Digital Art like this.
